Emmerson is a new generation tetraploid italian ryegrass. It is a mid-late maturity cultivar with excellent seedling vigour, with excellent production peak from August to late October. It has considerably better late season quality than annual types and many late season cultivars. It has good rust resistance making it ideally suited for inland irrigation or humid coastal environments, as well as dryland winter rainfall regions.

Sowing Rates

Management Tips

  • Emmerson should be sown as early as possible in autumn to ensure rapid establishment with warm soil temperatures.
  • Trials have shown that winter feed is reduced by 100kg DM/ha for each day that sowing is delayed.
  • Ideally sow with starter fertiliser, DAP or MAP at 20kg P per ha.
  • Graze Emmerson as early as plants will withstand pulling to ensure good tillering, especially if sowing with companion legumes.
  • Trials have shown that winter feed can be increased by 500kgDM/ha for each 10kg/ha increase in sowing rate up to 50 kg/ha.
  • Additional production gains can be achieved by applying further Nitrogen after grazing's. Additional P should also be applied if it is likely to be limiting.
  • Emmerson will respond best over winter to rotational grazing and can be set stocked as soon as pasture feed on the farm matches livestock requirements.
  • If locking up for silage or hay, graze down evenly before closing and apply Le-mat for control of red legged earth mite. Apply a balanced top dressing of N:P:K:S to ensure maximum yield and quality and balance nutrient loss from fodder removal.
