Yield Results

EMX 1.6 is an exciting new, high yielding rape that has shown excellent attributes since trialling began in Australia in 1995. In NSW trials in 1997 and 1998 it was one of three lines that showed good resistance to wingless grasshopper which wiped out the trial. In yield trials over eight years, it has always been in the best group, averaging second behind Goliath.

Animal Performance

EMX 1.6 has shown excellent palatability for both sheep and cattle and provided the highest liveweight gain in a lamb finishing trial conducted by AgResearch at Lincoln New Zealand. The trial was sown on 26 October 2004 and grazed until 2 March 2005. Stocking rate was set according to yield. EMX 1.6 was included in that trial, as it was selected for release into Australia in 2005 following successful seed multiplication in Australia.

"I got the best production that I have ever had over 15 years of growing summer crops and topped the Hamilton market with my lambs. EMX 1.6 forage rape had no problems with pests. It was a natural progression from what I had been previously using.

The paddock was ploughed and rotary hoed and finally sown to EMX 1.6 forage rape at 3kg/ha with MAP fertilizer @50kg/ha with a baker boot just below the surface followed with light covering harrows.

I sowed 40 ha in total, the first 25 ha in the second week of October and then another 15 ha in early November. There was good rain just prior to sowing in October and good follow on rain and the EMX1.6 forage rape jumped out of the ground like wildfire.

I set stocked with 25 dry sheep equivalents per hectare and then increased it to 34 DSE/ha. The final grazing I had the stocking rate up to 42 DSE/ha for about ten days to graze it out prior to sowing pasture. They had access to rolls of grass hay as a source of fibre.

The first grazing was in late December and the EMX 1.6 provided feed until the end of April. The Angus x Hereford cattle put on 100kg and the lambs started from 16 and dressed at 28kg. The lighter spring drop first cross lambs commenced grazing in January, yielding around 22kg dressed.

The EMX1.6 forage rape grew to the top of my knees (approximately 8t/ha) before I commenced grazing. It had remarkable regrowth and didn't get badly damaged by pests. I'll be sowing it again this season."
