- Excellent winter production
- Improved persistence
- Good rust resistance
Highly winter-active perennial ryegrass, suited to early
or marginal ryegrass country.
FITZROY is a release perennial ryegrass bred by Agriculture
Victoria and based on selections from Kangaroo Valley (KV). It
has been selected and proven for high winter production,
reduced rust and improved persistence over other KV types.
It is recommended to be sown in traditional perennial ryegrass
areas where farmers are looking for high winter production. It
can also be sown in marginal dryland sites, where KV has
traditionally failed and Victorian ryegrass is known to persist.

What the producers say...
Jack Spiers, Satimer VIC
Fitzroy ryegrass has outperformed other perennial ryegrass varieties by
between 30 to 60% in an independent demonstration project in the
Western District of Victoria. “It is pretty obvious what is going on. The first year we measured growth
and Fitzroy was very good through the winter. It was clearly the best the
first year and it was the same again in the second winter - about 60%
better than the worst variety and 30% better than Victorian which was the
next best.”
Ken and Sue McLennan, Quirindi NSW
The native pastures at “The Branch” (at Timor in the Upper Hunter) also
needed to provide a little extra winter production so in April 1999, Ken
aerially spread 2.5 tonnes of Fitzroy perennial ryegrass seed (5 kg/ha)
and 300kg of Endura caucasian clover (0.6 kg/ha). The Fitzroy
established well to give good winter production. “The aerial oversowing will now give us the much needed extra winter
production as well as a long term persistent perennial legume.”
MANAGEMENT TIPS
- Fitzroy perennial ryegrass can be sown at 8 - 12 kg per hectare
in a mix with Leura sub clover.
- Fitzroy can also be sown at 4 - 6 kg per hectare in a mix with Lincoln to boost winter production, whilst maintaining late season
production.
