- Good grazing tolerance
- Excellent cold climate suitability
- Strong pest and disease resistance
- Semi-dormant (4/5)
Persistent dual-purpose option
Bred from NZ and US lines, KAITUNA has a broad background,
including some material common to WL Southern Special.
It has a low crown providing improved grazing tolerance and has
been selected for resistance to major pests and diseases of
lucerne in Australia.
KAITUNA has shown broad adaptation to be suited to all lucerne
growing regions where producers are looking for a
semi-dormant lucerne with high yield and quality but with good
persistence under grazing.

What the producers say...
Geoff Griffin, Cowra NSW
A new 20 ha dryland block of Kaituna lucerne was sown by Geoff in the
autumn of 2002 . “And we’ve been really surprised how well it has grown, when you
consider the little rain we’ve had”.
The Kaituna has performed so well in fact that Geoff is considering
planting more of it when he upgrades his irrigation and develops
additional land for lucerne production - possibly within the next 12
months.
Michael Blake, Hamilton VIC
Michael sowed a paddock of Kaituna in spring 2000 and only grazed it
lightly over the first summer. But its production in the second year was
exceptional – 14 t DM/ha utilised dryland. “Its third year was very dry but it had 5.5 t/ha which we were not willing
to spray due to the conditions and we were appreciative of the valuable
feed”. “The Kaituna has come back well after the dry summer and is now
locked up for a valuable autumn hay cut. I’m very impressed with its high
leaf-to-stem ratio compared to other lucernes sown on the property.”
