Selected for performance
under close grazing
STAMINA GT6 has emerged from a long evaluation process in
both USA and Australia.
A program was set up in California to develop some lucerne
varieties specifically suited to intense and close grazing by
livestock.
Breeding lines were set stocked during the growing season for
between 180 and 210 days per year over two years and the most
persistent lines were selected. They were maintained at 7-10cm
in height throughout this period.
Of those showing superior persistence under grazing, 24 lines
were sent to Australia for evaluation at three sites. After three
years the best 5 were selected for further evaluation at other sites
around Australia.
Following the drought of 2002/03, it became clear that these
lucernes were better able to cope with the harsh conditions and
grazing pressure, and STAMINA GT6 was identified for
commercialisation.
STAMINA GT6 is a winter active variety (activity rating 6), with
good establishment vigour, well suited to dryland mixed farming
practices. It has performed better against other standards the
longer the trials have progressed, particularly post-drought.
It can be sown either alone or under crop for producers looking
for a lucerne that will be better able to cope with periods of poor
grazing management due to unfavourable seasonal conditions.
Under good conditions it will perform better and provide good
quality grazing or fodder conservation.
